The Power of Twitter for your Business

So is Twitter an application that can be used to increase business awareness and provide beneficial contacts or is it merely a fad for teenagers to chat with each other? This very question was a topic at a recent SEO/SEM meeting I attended.

The best advice I ever received regarding Twitter was “Do not try and sell on Twitter”. Now what does that statement really mean? Well the point of the statement is use Twitter to introduce yourself or your company to the Web and share knowledge. Exchanging helpful links to sites of mutual interest or giving out
free advice to relevant topics is the key. The end result hopefully being gaining beneficial contacts and possible sales.

Now don't get me wrong, I do on occasion include links to my products on my Twitter feeds but as a rule try and do this sparingly. Make sure you include your website or blog on your Twitter profile. Some people even use a background on Twitter
that has their business contact info and other websites made into the background image itself. Now don’t go over board and get spamming with this approach but rather use it as an additional information section.

In taking into account these simple steps I have begun to make some great business contacts. These include discovering like competitors who you can share vendor information with and discovering new products to include on our site.
I have also been approached with business looking to have their new products promoted on our site and often at a discounted price. I have even found several poker leagues around the country looking for sponsors for their events and willing
to offer free promotion of my web site at their events.

Even in one case I contacted a poker blog who was looking for fresh content for their site and was able to obtain an interview for one of my friends who makes poker tables. This was free pub for her and will hopefully lead to increased sales. Just think of the power that Twitter socializing can provide for you and your business if your willing to invest a few minutes a day.

If you are using Web tracking tools such as Google Analytics, view your traffic sources, and track how much traffic you are getting from your Twitter profile. You should see it referenced as twitter.com / referral. You may be amazed how many people are clicking over!

Include your Twitter contacts on the bottom of your e-mails and newsletters and anywhere else you think people will view this information. Now get out there and create a Twitter account and grow your business!
